I am thinking of my Brazilian and Cuban friend, they told me couple of days ago: be an observer, listen to people and learn from them.
I listened to them. I was observing today in Szimpla a conversation of a movie or casting director, he was English speaking, a native person. I can recall he said he was involved in a movie shooting and casting in Hungary. Unfortunatelly, I was not brave to approach him this time and get into exchanging experiences, plus he was with three more people and I just did not wanted to bother. I also did not felt to be on top of myself for such conversation, usually I am and I like to hear other people experiences. For some reason this time I did not do it. I could send my blog post to Boscolo to share it with the people staying in their hotel, but I do not want to go that far. 😀
Why Boscolo, read further…
At the same time he started talking about his experiences, I was just finishing critisizing casting and modeling agencies in Hungary on my Instagram social networking profile. I noted down my anger and thoughts, a bit with relief I clicked save button and then I realized due to the many used hashtags nothing remained from the text under my uploaded photo. As he talked he draw my attention to the conversation and I started listening/observing his experiences with the “professional” Hungarian film industry.
He was telling a story about the job he did with one of the camera guy or photographer involved in a movie shooting.
Listen to this, this is Hungary and it’s film industry!
I am not sure I remembered all the details of the story, but to sum it up, he finished some work with this Hungarian photographer and the next day he found a huge red, expensive carpet in front of his office or flat. I started to be more interested in the story as couple of minutes earlier I was just about to express how the whole Hungarian filming and industry is just ackward (there are exceptions).
However, this movie production related person was shocked on the approach of the photographer, he took the carpet and drove it back to the photographer and asked him why he gave him this carpet? The camera guy said: well, you know there will be many more shooting jobs available in the upcoming months and I want you to take me into consideration. I almost vomitted on hearing this. He also, I assume and he shared ironically with the other 3 people yet the following: maybe some people are getting SUV’s as for gratefullness and future jobs.
I am sure this movie maker person plays important role in the movie industry as he took out a Boscolo hotel visit card. I am so sorry I did not share couple of words with him on the spot, but who knows Budapest is small and I know many foreign people, maybe we will meet yet.
So Mr. movie maker, FYI in Hungary corruption is everywhere. It is disgusting.
I bet casting agencies are competing among each other for Hollywood movies in the same way, I will share some thoughts later on this yet, but first…
I am sorry for being unpolite today and listening to your conversation, it was a moment when I was thinking about the same things and you just reinforced me about my thoughts about this industry in Hungary. I am so ashamed of my country and myself too.
This brings me to even teasier topics, only to reflect you on our countries and people mechanism.
Can you imagine if you are giving a birth to a baby in a govermental hospital you are expected to pay minimum 100.000 Ft to the doctor into his pocket?
Did you know some doctors are encouraging women having fear of a birth to do Cesarian birth instead of helping them to overcome the fear of natural birth? FYI, the birth price rises if you are getting a baby with Cesarian birth…
Do you know this is a general Hungarian mentality, to PAY FROM GRATEFULLNESS?!
The doctors are opening private offices to make you to pay for the birth. I did pay too. I never saw a receipt about the paid money. Plus you pay the nurses, obstretrician etc. I am not proud of this, but it was about someones life, I would now act different.
My employer never told me: Gabi, here is the part for the taxes to your pocket.
I think this topic is too much complex, I wanna go back to the started topic…
Yes, this is Hungary, I am glad this movie maker brought back that carpet to the camera guy/phhotographer, at least one person acted in a different way and showed an example.
I became indifferent with shooting jobs, even I really enjoyed taking some roles and I was very enthusiastic in the beginning. I am still, but not running anymore for collecting experience for 7000 Ft/12 hours work. I will happily help though a friend to make his own movie for free, if the theme captures my attention.
I want to work and learn from professional people. Once I read somewhere, always work with people that know more then you.
Sometimes the crew or people working at the agency are not even speaking English, however as in many places in the world not always the right people are working in these creative jobs, but they are family members, friends, mistresses, lovers getting opportunities etc…(respect to those family members etc. that are professional in it)
Honestly, I do not feel to act professional sometime either with these agencies, crews as they threat people as slaves in many cases and it makes us to loose motivation.
Last summer I worked with an English dancing group on a commercial shooting, the leader of the dancing school talked to me as I speak English and I am chatty in general. He expressed his unsatisfaction of the production crew he worked with, the unprofessional way they were threated. He was also offended how anyway low paid extras were threated. He looked at the meal they gave for lunch to extras and he was shocked.
And you know what is the reaction of the agencies when you express your concerns?
- they will never call you again to work;
- they will tell you: “You do not need to accept to work for 7.000 Ft and we are not able to ask for more for extras, as otherwise customer will leave to the other agency”.
Yes, we do not.
But, is it really fair to pay this money for a 12 hours work? Actually, I would be fine to have the precentage also if a movie made it to the top, but the well written disclaimers are not allowing 🙂
And sorry, where are the negotiation skills of these people in the agencies, where is the humanity of these agencies to protect these working people to have better working and living circumstances??? And happier life???
And let’s turn it around, the customer should be ALSO ASHAMED for making more million dollars on successfull movies and exploiting people. Paying celebrities more dollars for shooting a scene of a very famous actress smoking a cigarette for 1 hour, while the extras work 12 hours for less then 25 Euro. **If your skin is not white, you get better price 😉
It is such a “good feeling” being discriminated on a job in your own country.
AND AS THE END….
I have a lot to learn yet about acting and actually I do not take it as something I seriously want to, I am fine with these small roles, however these last 2 years I lost my interest more and more. I hope to get it back at some time later as I find this job very interesting, creative and enjoyable. Now I had to take on an office job, but at least it is a job in a company where job enviroment is international, humanous, taxes and contributions will be properly paid. It is not the most well paying, but above the Hungarian average for this position.
**BTW. each time I made a post as this one I know I offended casting agencies, but why are they offended if they are doing things in a proper and professional way?
